Happy New Year Seattle!!
Seattle’s Iconic and freshly remodeled Space Needle Rings in the new year with a first ever light show for 2019’s New Year celebration featuring Elation, Acclaim lighting, and brought to you by the professionals at Illuminate Production Services out of Sacramento, California!!
Seattle, Washington is one of the most beautiful cities on planet earth known the world over as birth place of grunge music, Starbucks Coffee, Microsoft, seemingly endless rainy weather, and one of the most Iconic structures on the planet… The Space Needle. Born in 1962, the space needle has just undergone more than a one hundred million-dollar reimagination in the form of what they refer to as the “Spacelift.”
Entire walls, barriers, and even floors have been replaced by clear structural glass to dramatically expand views. Whether you are leaning into the breathtaking views on our unique Skyriser glass benches or stepping out onto The Loupe, the world’s first and only revolving glass floor, you will be thrilled by this unforgettable experience. To unveil this incredible renovation, The City of Seattle wanted to ring in 2019 with a show for the ages. They called upon Illuminate Production Services to tackle this first-ever spectacular of lighting excellence. This would prove to be no easy feat as the professionals at IFS were facing a laundry list of challenges. If insanely strict timelines weren’t enough, the challenge of transporting nearly ninety fixtures to illuminate the 605 foot rotating structure for the biggest party of the year would at least make things interesting. To add a little icing on the cake; they had mother nature to deal with as well. 50mph sustained winds gusting to 75mph, and continuous downpours of liquid sunshine courtesy of Seattle’s typical late December weather were ever present. No pressure right? Well, They pulled it off in a big way in what could quite possibly be one of the most stunning light shows Seattle has ever seen.
This show required a series of fixtures that not only had to be extremely powerful, but each had to be outdoor rated to put up with Seattle’s harsh outdoor elements especially at elevation. This called for Elation’s highly acclaimed PROTEUS BEAM™ and PROTEUS HYBRID™, PALADIN™ and CUEPIX 16IP™ as well as the Dyna Drum HO from Acclaim lighting. All fixtures were up to the challenge and performed flawlessly.

The up lighting throughout the Space Needle was the responsibility of a mixture of Acclaim Dyna Drum HO fixtures as well as Elation’s Proteus Hybrid which according to Rick Franke of Illuminate Production Services is an outdoor rated fixture which currently has no equal. The proteus Hybrid handled the task of down lighting from the top the Space Needle as well. The Dyna Drum also provided down lighting in the glass floor down.
Throughout the core and outside portions of the Space Needle you will find Elation’s Paladin, CUEPIX 16ip and the Proteus Beam fixtures which added an additional layer of effect by working with the remaining smoke from the fireworks to add more snap to the entire show.
